Deuterium gas (2H2; D2) is used in the manufacture of silicon semiconductors and microchips in circuit boards through the process of deuterium-protium exchange. Deuterium annealing replaces the protium with deuterium and prevents deterioration of the chip circuitry from chemical attack. This significantly extends and improves the life cycle of semi-conductors and microchips. It allows chips to be made smaller, have high circuit densities (high density chips) and have a longer life cycle.
