Deuterium gas (2H2; D2) is used in the manufacture of silicon semiconductors and microchips in circuit boards through the process of deuterium-protium exchange. Deuterium annealing replaces the protium with deuterium and prevents deterioration of the chip circuitry from chemical attack. This significantly extends and improves the life cycle of  semiconductors chips and microchips. It allows chips to be made smaller, have high circuit densities (high density chips) and have a longer life cycle.
