The demand for heavy water used for electric power generation comes from:

• providing make-up heavy   water to existing Pressurized  Heavy Water  Reactors.  (PHWR)

• supplying heavy water for the initial fill of new reactors using   non-enriched uranium as fuel.

• providing both the annual make-up requirement and initial fill requirement for PHWR’s operating on new fuel sources such as Thorium and reprocessed spent fuels from certain reactors.

Science and Medical use

As with electricity supply everywhere, the strongest growth in nuclear-based electric power generation is in the countries with rapidly developing economies. In those countries, energy demand is accelerating and reliance on imported oil may represent both an economic and strategic risk to a country’s future.

Examples of high and emerging growth include India and China.
